Helena Hornbacher applied to our foundation in 2021 and received a scholarship for the arts.
She writes below how this scholarship impacted her:
"Thank you so much for your support with this scholarship and for all the work you do to support the local performing arts community; it's really really appreciated.
Thanks to the KMF Scholarship Grant, I was able to attend the 2021 NZ Jazz Foundation Student Workshops in December of last year up in Wellington. During the five days I spent there, I auditioned and was placed into a Combo Band, attended Saxophone Masterclasses, Improvisation Workshops and Theory Lectures. It was pretty full-on but so rewarding and fun, too! On the last day of the workshop, the different bands all performed to one another, and it was really amazing to not only hear so many great young musicians, but to play with people I'd only met a few days earlier and have a great time doing so. In the afternoon, some of us decided to go busking in the streets of Wellington, and around thirty of us played and performed together for hours. I met so many lovely and talented people and made friends with whom I am still in touch nearly eight months later! This week of jazz was amazing, not just because of the music I played or the skills I learned, but because of the connections, friendships, and confidence it gave me. I really feel that these workshops had a noticeable impact on my playing, particularly my improvisation skills, which have been really helpful in my learning and performance this year.
Without the support from the KMF, I would not have been able to have this incredible experience. I am so grateful to the KMF and everyone who supports what they do, because their help has enabled me to grow in confidence and skill as a musician. I can't overstate how helpful and appreciated this scholarship has been, and am thankful to anyone who helped me make this trip possible."
